David James – England’s #1 – HO SOCCER goalkeeper - enjoyed a vintage 2007-2008 season and now, at the age of 37, is currently in the best form of his entire career. The 2008 FA Cup win for Portsmouth against Cardiff City topped a great season for James, culminating with the honour of the 2007/2008 PFA Goalkeeper of the Season award.
James started out with Watford, and was voted Watford’s Player of the Year in the 1990/91 season after playing a key role in their escape from relegation. In 2008 he received Watford’s Hall of Fame award. James really came into the limelight with his move from Watford to Liverpool, and along with Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler, acquired the nickname the "Spice Boys" – comparing them to the Spice Girls for partying more than winning games.
James has played at the top level for Aston Villa, West Ham United and Manchester City, before arriving at Portsmouth in August 2006 for £1.2 million.
During the 06-07 season, he was acknowledged by many as the best-performing goalkeeper in the Premiership. Manager Harry Redknapp went to the extent of calling him “the best keeper I've worked with".
James has to his credit the most league appearances for a goalkeeper, currently over 500, since the start of the Premiership over 15 seasons ago, and was only the 3rd player in history to play over 500 Premiership games.
Not just a great footballer, James is known as a very nice chap, and has established the David James Foundation to help farmers in the African country Malawi. James has also modelled for Giorgio Armani and H&M, and writes a column for The Observer newspaper, where he has written about environmental issues.
